This NY Times article summarizers the current projects to link East African countries to the rest of the world with undersea fiber optic cables. Drivers for the push are also discussed: At the moment, the Indian Ocean’s eastern African seabed is the only one in the world without a submarine fiber-optic cable, forcing the region to rely heavily on limited and expensive satellite links. As a result, countries along the coast and in its hinterland have some of the highest communications costs in the world. Ciena reported positive results for the quarter. More interestingly were the webcast comments of Ciena’s CEO Gary Smith: “There’s a new market appearing,” he said. “Let’s call it converged Ethernet. You’re seeing a shift toward the compression of layers, from Layer 0 to…call it Layer 2.5. We’re at the fairly early stages of that. There’s no market data around it, so we’re still measuring it in older markets, like metro optical and long-haul optical. But it’s moved on us. We’re all struggling to get our arms around this new market, the combination of switching, transport and Ethernet.” Filed under: Fiber Optic Telecom Business Issues Comments: None |
